IF YOU WANT TO POST A FOUND DOG ON SOCIAL MEDIA, HERE IS WHAT NOT TO SHARE.

  • If you post a photo of the dog your found, do not mention any identifying markings.

  • Do not share if the dog is spayed or neutered.

  • Do not share the weight of the dog.

  • Do not share the color of the harness, leash, collar, shirt, bandana, etc.  that the dog was wearing when found.

  • Do not share the estimated age of the dog.

  • Essentially have the owner provide all of these answers for you so that you are comfortable that you are actually speaking to the actual owner.

  • If the dog was micro-chipped but the chip was never registered the owner should still have this information in their paperwork or their Vet should have it. Have them provide the chip number.

WARNING:

Whenever you are contacted by someone who claims the dog you found belongs to them, have them prove ownership. Remember, let them descibe the dog's appearance, don't do it for them.  Have them provide additional photos.

They should be able to:
  • describe the dog (male, female, neutered, spayed, color of collar, length and color of hair,  size, weight, etc.)

  • provide the name of dog (see if he responds to the name when called).

  • provide their Vet's name. If you are not sure if the person contacting you is the actual owner, you can always meet them at their Vet's office so that the Vet can confirm and identify the dog.

With all of this said, we do sincerely hope you found someone's lost pet and are able to successful reunite them. That is always what we want to hear. Losing a cherished pet can be devastating so PLEASE do your best to find the owner.

There are unsavory people who may just simply want a free dog (especially something as cute as a yorkie) and call to claim it as there own even though they are not the rightful owner. You found the dog so for the time being, his life it in your hands. Please be careful about turning the dog over to just anyone.

If you find a small stray dog please do not assume it now belongs to you. "Finders keepers, Losers weepers" does NOT APPLY to lost dogs. You are required by law to do your best to find the owner for five full days. Please call your local Humane Society and Animal Control to let them know you found a dog. If the owner contacts those agencies they will have your information on file. Contacting Jamie Katz, private pet detective is also suggested.

When you find a dog that appears to be lost, injured, or abandoned it is important to bring it to a safe location (such as in your home or a covered shaded screened porch or lania if weather is mild). If you need to you can keep them gated in a spare bathroom, bedroom, laundry room.)

  • Provide a thick blanket for bedding, a bowl of cool water (not cold and no ice) and keep dog calm. A quiet environment is best.

  • If dog appears to be sick or injured, take to a local animal hospital immediately.

  • Call us at 772-291-8101

  • Does the dog have a license tag? A name tag with phone number? Call owner.

  • Check for Microchip! Take the dog to any local Vet's office. They will scan the dog for free to see if the dog has a microchip. If the dog is chipped, the owner's contact information should be available.

  • You can usually place a free "FOUND DOG" ad in your local newspaper, Facebook groups, craigslist, etc.  Keep any identification, such as collar or tags, should any question arise later.

  • Place an ad on www.craigslist.com in your area under the LOST AND FOUND PET SECTION. There are also many other websites on the internet where you can post that you have found a lost dog.

If you find a very old dog, sometime they were used for breeding and have just been dumped. Again, not always. If you need our help sorting through this just email us at floridayorkierescue@yahoo.com. We are always here to help.
